A drawing of a Dinosaur head, made with the help of an easy step by step tutorial.

Now you can learn how to draw a dinosaur head that has some of its coolest parts on display — a fierce looking eye and lots of very sharp teeth. While drawing the entire dinosaur body is always fun, sometimes taking a closer look at things results in a more interesting composition. This view of the head, with an open mouth, lets the viewer see much more detail and makes for a very eye-catching drawing.

This particular dinosaur drawing is based on what a velociraptor is believed to have once looked like. It is one of the most well known dinosaurs thanks to films like Jurassic Park. These creatures hunted in packs like today's wild wolves. Their razor sharp teeth and quickness made them a predator to be reckoned with!

Getting Started with Drawing Guides

The best way to get young artists off to a good start to any drawing project is with the help of drawing guides.

You may have noticed that there is a grid of three dashed lines, both in horizontal and vertical directions, on every step of this tutorial. If students make theirown centered lines on theirown paper, before drawing, they will have an easy reference to follow.

For instance, as seen in Step 1 below, the dinosaur head shape starts in the corner of one top rectangle and curves up to the left and down to the corner of a bottom rectangle.

Drawing skills are all about seeing how to get the placement of lines on your paper, so having some visual reference point to get started, will always help anyone learn how to be a little more accurate.

So does that mean students need to draw a big fat pencil lines one their sheet of paper before they start? Goodness no, please don't! That will most likely be hard to erase and distract from any finished art. No, simply fold the paper in half twice , both ways , make a crease, and unfold. The beauty is that by the time the drawing is done and colored in, the creases made for these guidelines will disappear.

Materials for How to Draw a Dinosaur Head

  • Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
  • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
  • Black Sharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
  • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
  • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.
